About AMIYA BHATTACHARYA

Born in 1949, Amiya Bhattacharya studied at the Indian College of Arts & Draftsmanship, Kolkata, and went on to serve as Senior Art Director at the Ananda Bazar Patrika Group. He has designed for institutions such as CIMA (Centre of International Modern Art) and Penguin Books India. Amiya's canvases are suffused with emotion and sensitivity, articulated through a personal lexicon of recurring symbols- outstretched hands, drapery, moons, flora, and solitary chairs - all set within dreamlike architectural spaces of arches, staircases, and luminous windows. His palette moves between rich burgundies, ochres, rusts, and blues, lending warmth and depth to his contemplative worlds. Deeply influenced by the late Bikash Bhattacharjee, Amiya continues to evolve his own surreal yet intimate vision of the feminine and the poetic. His works are part of significant collections across India and abroad. He lives and works in Kolkata.
