Despite learning a lot from Suhas Roy, his father-teacher, Suman Roy made a conscious effort to carve a separate identity for himself as a painter with his deft brushstrokes, texture, palette and compositions. Roy's early works were landscape paintings, followed up with a series on tribal people and their living. Finally Roy came up with a series of works on Christ, focusing on the character of Jesus, painting the Christ at peace with himself, as a symbol of compassion and dignity despite undergoing immense suffering, radiating a saintly and melodic quality.
